The Rhode Island Invasive Species Council (RIISC) has recently updated its list of Rhode Island’s invasive plants. Many of the plants that appear on the new list are present in Jamestown. Many of these species are increasingly posing environmental threats to the Island’s ecology.
The RIISC is an outreach program of the Rhode Island Natural History Survey, The Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station, and the University of Rhode Island Cooperative Extension. RIISC was formed to work to protect native biodiversity in Rhode Island. The Council pursues its mission by assembling and sharing information on the “presence, distribution, ecological and economic impacts, and management of invasive species” ; promoting the use of “native species and non-invasive alternatives throughout Rhode Island” ; and by working “cooperatively with researchers, conservation organizations, government agencies, the green industries, and the general public to identify and manage invasive species pro-actively and effectively.”
