Ecological Considerations:
Eutrochium fistulosum, commonly known as Hollow Joe-Pye Weed, is a tall, flowering, herbaceous perennial in the sunflower family. It typically grows from four to seven feet high and features coarsely-serrated, lance-shaped, dark green leaves that grow in whorls of four to seven on sturdy green hollow stems. Tiny, vanilla-scented, dull dusky rose flowers grow on its large, terminal, domed, compound inflorescenses that can extend twelve to eighteen inches in diameter. Hollow Joe-Pye Weed blooms in mid-summer to early fall and its flowers attract butterflies, bees and other nectar-feeding pollinators. Nutlets mature to shiny black 4-5 weeks after its flowers have faded.
Hollow Joe-Pye Weed favors moist, rich soils, growing alongside ditches and marshes, or in moist woodlands forests. It prefers full sun but also grows well in partial shade.

Propagation Mechanisms/Strategies for Encouraging its Establishment:
Seeds can be sewn in the fall and should be planted thickly as germination rates usually are low. Plants can also be propagated from softwood cuttings taken in late spring or by division. Divide plants in fall as they go dormant, or in the spring just as shoots first appear.
Seed will appear about a month after the flowers fade. To collect seeds, take the entire top of the plant or shake it into a paper bag. Seeds can be allowed to dry out before sowing and do not have to be perfectly cleaned. Store them in a sealed refrigerated container.
